Abstract
This report summarises methods used globally for aerial survey, synthesising the information to focus on development of a survey design for inshore schooling pelagic finfish species in New Zealand. Discussion centres on aspects of two methods most likely to provide components for a design (distance-sampling and photogrammetry), suggesting the first steps for investigating a possible design and concluding that school species composition is too complex for determination by photographic analysis.
