Abstract
Preliminary stock assessments for orange roughy within the SPRFMO Convention Area were developed using spatially-disaggregated catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) analyses and a Bayesian state-space biomass dynamic model. This approach served to reliably estimate indices of stock abundance and infer stock status and trend in such low-information fisheries. Preliminary analyses were restricted to commercial catch and effort data from New Zealand fishing vessels and thus incomplete catch series.
