Region - Southland/Fiordland (FMA 5)


The Southern Region covers the traditional landing places of the Arai-te-Uru and Takitimu waka hundreds of years ago.

This Fisheries Management Region is home to a number of Ngai Tahu papatipu runanga and hapu, including Ngati Waewae, Makaawhio, Oraka-Aparima, and Waihopai a number of hapu of the Ngai Tahu iwi. Species particularly valued by Ngai Tahu iwi include toheroa, paua, rock lobster (koura), kina, cockles (tuaki) and eels (tuna).
