Abstract
The report deals only with cetacean species and addresses part of Objective 1 of PR02006/05 to: estimate and report the total numbers, releases and deaths of marine mammals where possible by species, fishery and fishing method, caught in commercial fisheries for the years 1990 to the end of the fishing year 2005106. After consultation with MFish it was agreed to limit this time series to fishing years 1994-95 to 2005-06, to report numbers by species, and to summarise capture information and present mean catch rates for all species combined using the ratio estimator for surface longline fisheries and for trawl fishing targeting jack mackerels in waters off west coast of the North Island (in fishery area JMA 7). Catch estimates have not been calculated for cetaceans because catches (by species) have been few and have generally involved multiple captures per tow by one or two vessels, separated in time and space.
