Abstract
The specific objective for this work under Objective 1 of PR02006/04 is: to estimate and report the total numbers, releases and deaths of marine mammals where possible by species, fishery and fishing method, caught in commercial fisheries for the years 1990 to the end of the fishing year 2005106. After consultation with MFish at the start of the project, the time series was restricted to 1994-95 to 2005-06 and the requirement for reporting on fur seal captures in longline fisheries was to summarise the data and report mean catch rates, based on the ratio estimator, where possible for surface longlines and to summarise the capture data for bottom longlines. The report is based on captures of New Zealand fur seals reported by MFish observers during surface and bottom longline fisheries and includes animals landed on the deck, whether alive or dead.
