Abstract
There are two biological stocks of tarakihi around mainland New Zealand, one off the east coast and one off the west coast. This report presents the first assessment for the western stock of tarakihi, which includes TAR 8 and the western portions of TAR 1 and TAR 7. The adult population is estimated to have declined to the default target biomass level (40% SB0) by 2010. Stock biomass is estimated to have declined over the last 10–15 years (to 2024–25) and is predicted to continue to decline due, in part, to a period of low recruitment in recent years (2016–2022).
