Title: FAR 2018/04 - Fisheries characterisation and catch-per-unit-effort analyses FLA 2
FAR-2018-04-FLA2-Characterisation-and-CPUE.pdf (3.4 MB)
The fisheries taking flatfish in FLA 2 were analysed from 1989¬-90 to 2015-16 using commercial catch and effort data. The FLA 2 fishery is largely concentrated around the port of Napier. Sand flounder and New Zealand sole are the dominant flatfish species caught.  The accepted CPUE index using daily aggregated data for combined flatfish species shows cyclic fluctuations in abundance, with indices for New Zealand sole and sand flounder showing similar trends to the aggregate series.

Title: FAR 2015/54 Testing the generality of the effect of environmental variables on flatfish catch.
FAR_2015_54_2939_ENV2013-08B_SO1.pdf (2.2 MB)
Here we assessed the influence of environmental variables on yellow belly flounder (YBF) in the Kaipara Harbour using commercial YBF catch data. This involved creating a YBF catch index and lagging it so water quality and climatic data were compared to periods when YBF were juveniles. Nitrate and the Southern Oscilation Index (SOI) were often related to YBF catch rates (Pearson = 0.4 – 0.6), emphasising the potential influence of land use and SOI positive (La Niña) events to YBF recruitment.

Title: Fishery characterisation and set net catch-per-uniteffort indices for flatfish in FLA 1, 1989–90 to 2010–11
12_32_FAR.pdf (8.6 MB)
This report describes relative abundance of the main flatfish species caught by set net on the west and east coasts of northland (Fishstock FLA 1) for the 1989–90 to 2010–12 fishing years. Catch rates in seven discrete fisheries are standardised. The annual indices describe long term steady declines in many areas that are unexpected in such a fast growing species. Of particular concern are the declining trends for yellow-belly flounder in the west coast harbours of Manukau and Kaipara.
