Abstract
Characteristics of ling samples taken in the Chatham Rise longline fishery and west coast South Island trawl fishery were examined to determine what factors influenced changes in sex ratios in the data over time. The trends could not be comprehensively explained. However, much of the initial decline in the Chatham longline CPUE can probably be explained by a marked reduction in abundance of large fish in the early 1990s. The timing and location of ling spawning on Chatham Rise was defined.
