Abstract
Barracouta (Thyrsites atun) catches from the east coast South Island account for 87% of the total BAR 1 catch for 1990–2017, with 53% from barracouta tows. Annual BAR 1 landings were 9000–11 500 t during 2009–14, 5000–6000 t in 2015–16, and 9000 t in 2017. For the east coast South Island, an overall increasing trend was apparent after 2008 in the small vessel, bottom trawl CPUE, despite a small drop in 2015–16. This trend was similar to that seen in comparable trawl survey biomass indices.
