Abstract
Aerial line-transect surveys for the south-coast South Island (SCSI) Hector’s dolphin population were conducted in the 2017-2018 austral summer. The survey area (about 6139 km2) was surveyed with 2574 km of transect lines (with more intensive effort in Te Waewae Bay; TWB) using double-observer distance sampling protocols. All 75 sightings used in the analysis were observed in TWB, resulting in an estimate of 332 animals (CV: 22%; 95% CI 217–508).
