Abstract
New Zealand rig (SPO) fisheries are described for 1989–90 to 2017–18, based on commercial catch- effort data. Nine commercial fisheries (5 setnet and 4 bottom trawl), defined by location and method of capture were evaluated as biomass indices to track population trends in the five QMAs. Bottom trawl fisheries showed increasing abundance trends; setnet fisheries showed no trend. Observer and trawl survey size frequency data were used to determine the population component taken by each fishery.
