Abstract

This project explored the relationships between pup biometrics and some key demographic rates of New Zealand sea lions at the Auckland Islands. Strong patterns were estimated for pup mass and condition since 1980, indicative of changes in nutritional status. Positive correlations were obtained between pup mass and first-year survival and, more tenuously, between male minus female pup mass and annual pupping rate. Both these relationships may have utility for future population assessment.
