The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake had massive impacts on paua populations, resulting the ongoing closure of the local paua fishery. Surveys were undertaken over the last three years to monitor paua population recovery. An increase in paua abundance and post-earthquake recruitment were observed at fishery scale, although there was high variability between sites. Outcomes from this project will inform decisions about the re-opening and future management of this paua fishery.
