Abstract
Assessments of hake off the west coast of South Island (HAK 7) and on Chatham Rise (HAK 4 and part of HAK 1) are presented for the 2012–13 fishing year. Chatham Rise hake was fished down throughout the 1990s, but is currently estimated to be about 47% B0 following a recent upturn driven by a strong 2002 year class. The stock is probably being well monitored by the summer trawl survey. The status of the West Coast stock is less certain as the model fits primarily to a CPUE series. Current stock status is about 58% B0, with a B0 of about 89 000 t.
