Potting - Shags trapped in baited pots

Shags dive down into baited pots and can get trapped.
Overall, this is thought to be a minor risk. However, no formal risk assessment has been done on this issue. Records are kept of reported incidents
Extent of the issue
A lot of pot fishing occurs around New Zealand. However, there is no observer coverage in New Zealand pot fisheries, so we don't know the extent of the shag issue.
Current management
none at present
Future management
Fishing-related risks for all New Zealand seabird species will be assessed as part of New Zealand's National Plan of Action (NPoA) to reduce seabird capture in fisheries. Treatment plans will be developed where risks are considered above 'acceptable' levels.
