 Mechanical harvesting - Surf clams

Mechanical harvesting of surf clams churns up the seabed habitat.
The limited damage over limited areas means this is not thought to be a significant issue. Also, these shellfish live in high energy environments; so mechanical harvesting methods are not thougth to pose a significant risk.
Extent of the issue
Damage only occurrs in the limited areas where there is commercial harvesting of these shellfish.
There has been some increase in harvesting subtidal surf clams in recent years.
Current management
Because of the limited occurrence of and damage caused by mechanical harvesting, further management action is not considered necessary.
Future management
