The fisheries taking elephantfish in ELE 5 are described for the period 1989–90 to 2015–16, based on commercial catch and effort data. Only one bottom trawl standardised catch per unit effort (CPUE) analysis could be conducted, given the relatively small amount of available data. The abundance of elephantfish in ELE 5 is presently below the peak CPUE observed around 2010–11. However, current levels of CPUE remain well above the long-term average levels.

A bottom trawl survey of the east coast South Island (ECSI) in 10–400 m depths was carried out using R.V. Kaharoa (KAH1605) in April–June 2016. The core (30–400 m) survey was the eleventh in the winter ECSI inshore time series (1991–94, 1996, 2007–2009, 2012, 2014, and 2016). Four strata in 10–30 m (shallow strata), previously surveyed in 2007, 2012, and 2014, were surveyed again in 2016 to monitor elephantfish and red gurnard over their full depth range.

For many inshore fish species, CPUE indices derived from commercial catch and effort data often represent an important element of the monitoring of the individual fishstocks. The report presents an update (to 2012/13) of 12 standardised CPUE analyses for seven inshore fishstocks: ELE 3, ELE 5, ELE 7, GUR 3, GUR 7, TAR 7, and JDO 7. The report also documents refinements in the generic methodology used to generate an amalgamated CPUE data set from inshore trawl data recorded in two different formats.

Bottom trawling targeting red cod, elephantfish and flatfish take elephantfish off ECSI (ELE 3). BT fisheries for flatfish and stargazer take ELE in Foveaux Strait (ELE 5). Rig and elephantfish setnet (SN) fisheries take ELE in ELE 3, while SN fisheries take a few ELE in ELE 5. BT CPUE analyses lead to the conclusion that ELE in ELE 3 and ELE 5 are in a healthy state. Research trawl information for ELE off the ECSI, over 14 surveys spanning 1992 to 2009, lead to a similar conclusion.
