Title: Synthesis of New Zealand gamefish tagging data, 1975 to 2014.

The Gamefish Tagging Programme has recorded 68 775 released billfish, pelagic sharks, tuna and kingfish in the New Zealand EEZ over the last 40 years, mainly by recreational fishers. Release data is used to characterise the fishery. The 2166 recaptures help describe the distribution and movement of kingfish, striped marlin, mako and blue sharks with limited records for 16 other species. Tag and release has become integral in gamefish catch recording with benefits for research and conservation.

This report reviews stock monitoring options for kingfish. The commercial kingfish fisheries, because of their limited by-catch nature, offer poor stock monitoring potential. Sampling kingfish caught by recreational charter boat fisheries proved to be the best option for monitoring age composition in each of the kingfish QMAs. The ongoing recreational tagging data series has limited stock separation utility unless recreational effort data is also collected.

We attempted to define the location of the first annual growth zone in kingfish otoliths in order to accurately age kingfish. Length data and otolith increment counts from juvenile kingfish sampled from the wild, and from known-age, hatchery-reared kingfish, were analysed. Results were inconclusive but we suggest that kingfish ageing studies assume that the first growth zone is formed during autumn–winter of the second year, at an age of approximately 18 months.

Results from a  yield per recruit and spawning stock biomass per recruit (YPR/SSBR) analyses show that, under the current commercial and recreational MLS, the optimum fishing mortality (F40%) is 0.10–0.12; this equating to a total mortality (Z) for ages older than 7 years of 0.3. Kingfish stock boundaries are poorly understood making an improved understanding of stock structure a high research priority. “

Age estimates of New Zealand kingfish were derived from opaque-zone counts in sagittal otolith thin section preparations. Growth estimates (von Bertalanffy) were derived using age and length data collected from the eastern Bay of Plenty charter-boat fishery and growth increment data derived from tagging. Revised estimates of length-at-50%-maturity were 82.89 cm for males and 96.86 cm for females.

Title: Catch-at-age of yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) caught by recreational fishers in KIN 1, New Zealand.

Recreational fishers collected a total of 2091 kingfish lengths including 1287 (62%) from released fish.  Otoliths from 460 fish were aged using thin sections to create an age-length-key. Kingfish started to recruit to the fishery (75 cm) as three year olds and were fully recruited at five.  The maximum age observed was 24 years. The absence of teenage fish gave high Z estimates  of 0.77 in East Northland and 0.34 in Bay of Plenty.  Total mortality corresponding to 40% SSB/R is estimated.
