Photographic and trawl surveys of scampi in SCI 3 were conducted in September/October 2016. Both the photographic survey (of scampi and burrows) and the trawl survey estimates show a trend of increasing abundance since 2009. Trawl survey catch rates and burrow estimates are over twice those of 2009, but remain below estimates from 2001. Over 6300 scampi were tagged and released to investigate growth and some animals have been recaptured by industry.

This report summarises bycatch and discards of fish and invertebrates in New Zealand arrow squid and scampi trawl fisheries for 2002–03 to 2015–16, based on analysis of fisheries observer and commercial catch effort data. Barracouta, silver warehou, and spiny dogfish were the main bycatch species in the arrow squid fishery, with total annual bycatch of 9000–40000 t and discards of 1000–16000 t. Javelinfish, other rattails, and sea perch were the main bycatch species in the scampi fishery, with total annual bycatch of 2400–5600 t and discards of 900–4100 t.

A fishery characterisation and stock assessment have been undertaken and accepted for SCI 6A. A single stock model was developed, based on previous studies. Models examined sensitivity to assumptions about natural mortality and year class strength variability. All models provided broadly consistent stock trajectories, and suggest SSB is currently around 67–72% SSB0. Projections out to 2020 suggested that SSB would remain well above 40% SSB0 with future catches up to the TACC.

This report presents estimates of annual bycatch and discard levels in the commercial scampi fishery based on reported effort and scientific observer data. Combined estimates were made for QMS species, non-QMS species, invertebrates, and rattails; separate estimates were made for javelinfish. Scampi accounted for about 17% of the total catch; rattails (29%), sea perch (8%), ling (7%), and hoki (6%) were the main bycatch species. Currently about of 4.2 kg of fish are discarded for every 1 kg of scampi caught.
