There are currently no concerns relating to the current status of this stock though there are concerns that any increases in fishing effort on this stock could adversely bigeye and yellowfin tuna. New Zealand catches represent 1.5% of the total catch. The stock is presently above the level necessary to produce the maximum sustainable yield. Current catches from the stock are likely to be sustainable.

Current catches will move the stock towards a size that will support the maximum sustainable yield.
