Safe Fishing


Safety on the water is important. No one wants to become another statistic.

Here are some things to remember: 
Before going fishing
  • Learn to swim.
  • Check the weather forecasts.
  • Check the tides and sea conditionsl.
  • Let other people know where you are going and when you will be back.
  • Read and obey all warning signs. 
What to take with you
  • Take someone else - you should never fish alone.
  • Correctly fitting life jackets, one for each person including children.
  • Communication device/s - mobile phone, VHF radio, flares, torch.
Maritime New Zealand is responsible for promoting maritime safety including information on safe recreational pleasure boating on the water (sea, river or lake). Whether you have a kayak, personal water craft, waka, sail or power boat, you must know the rules, have the right equipment and be a responsible skipper.
