Physical characteristics

Smooth Oreo have uniform bluish-grey to greyish-brown bodies. Juveniles are silvery-grey with multiple dark blue blotches. They can reach a maximum length of 51 cm.

Life cycle

Smooth Oreo has an estimated maximum age of 86 years. It is estimated that females reach maturity at 40 cm in length and 31 years of age. Spawning takes place from late October to December.

Habitat

Smooth Oreo is found throughout New Zealand at depths of 600-1500 m.
