This report describes relative abundance of the main flatfish species caught by set net on the west and east coasts of northland (Fishstock FLA 1) for the 1989–90 to 2010–12 fishing years. Catch rates in seven discrete fisheries are standardised. The annual indices describe long term steady declines in many areas that are unexpected in such a fast growing species. Of particular concern are the declining trends for yellow-belly flounder in the west coast harbours of Manukau and Kaipara.
