Abstract
This report describes a series of small scale field studies that were undertaken to assess whether improvements could be made to the design of an aerial-access survey previously conducted in the Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay/Tasman Bay. The results of these studies and the following review suggest that most of the shortcomings identified with the 2005–06 survey design would be addressed if a greater number of days were surveyed and if interviews were conducted at three more access points.
