Abstract
This report summarises the level of non-protected fish species bycatch and discarding in the New Zealand jack mackerel target trawl fishery for the fishing years 2002–03 to 2013–14. The analyses were based on fisheries observer records and commercial catch effort data, and used two methods: one employing a ratio based estimator, the other based on a statistical model. Blue mackerel, frostfish, and redbait were the main bycatch species, with total annual bycatch of about 6650–18 800 t. Total discards were about 80–400 t per year, with spiny dogfish the main species discarded.
