Abstract
Assessments of hake off WCSI and on Chatham Rise are presented for 2016–17. Chatham Rise hake was estimated to be about 48% B0 following a recent biomass upturn driven by three strong year classes. The stock is probably being well monitored by the summer trawl survey. The status of the WCSI stock was uncertain as the two available relative abundance series (survey, and CPUE) had markedly different trends. Current stock status was about 26% B0, or 50% B0, depending on the abundance series.
